In the crypto space, "Sybil" refers to a type of attack where one entity creates multiple fake identities to manipulate a network. This term originates from the psychological case of Sybil Dorsett, who had dissociative identity disorder. In blockchain and decentralized systems, Sybil attacks can be used to influence governance votes, disrupt consensus mechanisms, or manipulate reputation-based networks.

To prevent Sybil attacks, crypto projects implement measures such as proof-of-work (PoW), proof-of-stake (PoS), identity verification, or reputation systems. Ensuring decentralization and security is crucial for blockchain networks to remain resistant to such manipulative tactics.

Many crypto projects distributing tokens through airdrops or other reward programs use anti-Sybil mechanisms to prevent abuse. If a project detects that a single user is creating multiple wallets to claim rewards unfairly, they may flag or blacklist those addresses. Common detection methods include analyzing transaction patterns, wallet activity, and IP addresses.

Example: In a high-profile case, a major DeFi project once disqualified thousands of wallets from its airdrop after identifying them as Sybil attackers, ensuring that only legitimate users received the tokens.
